AI answers are not stable. Ask the same question twice and the wording moves; ask it next month and the sources may have changed entirely. Any claim about AI visibility built on a single screenshot is worthless.
Citation tracking turns that noise into a measurement. We run a fixed question set on a fixed cadence across the major engines, and record mention rate, citation rate and share of voice against a named competitor set.
That gives you three things: a baseline, a trend, and an early warning when a competitor starts winning answers you used to own. It is the reporting layer on top of the GEO programme.
How we actually do it

- 01 · Lock a benchmark question set
- Fixed wording, fixed engines, fixed cadence. Changing the questions every month produces a number that cannot be compared to last month, which defeats the point.
- 02 · Track mentions, citations and competitors
- Mention rate tells you whether you are in the conversation. Citation rate tells you whether you are the source. Share of voice against a named competitor set tells you whether you are winning.
- 03 · Trace which sources the engines used
- The cited domains are the actionable part. If the engines keep quoting an industry directory or a review site, that is a route in that has nothing to do with your own blog.
- 04 · Report it beside the rest of the numbers
- AI visibility belongs on the same page as organic and conversions, not in a separate deck. We build it into your dashboard so it is one story.

How is this measured, is it reliable?
It is a sampled measurement, and we say so. Fixed questions on a fixed cadence give a defensible trend even though any individual answer varies. We report the method alongside the number so you can judge it.
How quickly does citation rate move?
Slower than rankings. Expect meaningful movement over one to two quarters, driven by content coverage and third-party corroboration rather than anything you can switch on.
Do we need an audit before tracking?
Yes, the audit builds the question set and the baseline. Tracking is what turns that snapshot into a programme.
